I regret to inform you that my batch mate and friend Ansari has expired on 13 April 2002 at Chittagong outer anchorage.
I called Capt. Altaf (11th) at Chittagong this morning and understand that Ansari, brother of Capt. M. A. Hashim (10th batch) and one other person named Muzaffar working in Capt. Hashim's office went to a vessel at Chittagong outer anchorage by a trawler boat. Capt. Hashim's brother was supposed to deliver port clearance to the Master and Ansari with Muzaffar were supposed to carry out draft survey of the vessel.
Instead of boarding the vessel they proceeded to forward of the vessel to read the draft mark. The boat got entangled with the anchor chain of the vessel and could not get itself free with the effect of very strong current. Efforts were made by using engine and helm of the boat to clear her but she capsized. All three of them and boatmen fell in the water. Muzaffar took off his clothes before going in water and swam. Ansari was nearby him but could not swim well. Muzaffar tried few times to raise Ansari above water but his head went in water everytime. Possibly Ansari became unconscious immediately after entering water. Meantime they were rescued by another trawler in the vicinity. Ansari's unconscious body was brought ashore but on arrival in hospital Ansari was pronounced dead. Capt. Hashim's brother's body could not be found till date.................................................
