Capt. Rafi Al Zabi, was Chief Officer on my first command is no more in this world. Since then, 1992, we maintained close communication. He was not only a genious, he was a living Encyclopedia of Shipping. Whenever I was in need of any information or advise related to Shipping, used to call him. Reply was almost instant. When I think, I will never ever hear his calm sweet North Bengal accent anymore, my eyes fill up with tears. Lets all pray for his eternal peace.

I know Rafi bhai since 2003 when he was sailing with QC group. He was an excellent gentleman, soft spoken, kind and always helpful to others. It will be very difficult for bhabi and his daughter to face such a difficult time of their life. It will also be a very difficult time for his very good friends like Ataul Kabir bhai, Hashem Bhai, and Moshin Bhai. My deepest sympathy is with all of them. May Almighty Allah give them the strength and courage to bear this heavy loss and may the departed soul rest in peace. Ameen.

Assalamu Aalaikum dear all, my wife conveyed this tragic news while I was visiting London and beleive me I became so much emotional as if someone of my own has expired. He was a dear friend and one of the brightest mariners among 20th batch. We lost an intelligent friend. Our Du\'a is always there for Rafi bhai and his family members. May Allah place all of them to Jannah. \" Kullu Nafseen Jaikatul Maw\'ut\". It is recommended to recite following Du\'a while Musiba (Calamity) befallen to any Muslim: \"Innalillahi wa Inna Elahei Rajeu\'n. Allahumma Jurni Fi Musibatee wa akhlifli Khairan Minha.\"

The namaje janaja of Captain Rafi al Jabi will take place at his home town, at Pachbibi, after Juhar Prayer, today [Sunday 04 Sep 2011]. He and his son, will be laid to rest thereafter. There will be a surgery on the daughter in Square Hospital soon. The mother will not see the son being buried. That is the greatest tragedy. Please pray for them from your hearts....

To day on 4th Sept- morning 6 am,I came out from home and walking around our dhanmondi lake.I was looking for Rafi sir as usual every day my morning walking partner. Suddenly, one of his neighbor stopped me and gave this most shocking news which is really unbearable.I was late to know this news as I did not watch TV news last night. Rafi-sir, still I can see your laughing face in front of me, still I can feel your hand in my hand, still I can hear,\"Moshiur,Kemon acho bhai ?...\" Sir, I can not believe that you are no more... we use to talk almost every day 1 hr at morning. This 01 hr use to be the best time in our day.Lot of things I use to learn from him. Some times, I use to be admired of him and his vast knowledge including religion and Quran.Last almost 1 month we offer Tarabi together in our Dhanmondi Mosque. He was my closest neighbor at Dhanmondi. He was one of the best human being ever I met.He used to be greatly sympathized to the poor and unfortunate people. Last 7 years we were together. May Allah bless his departed soul with Jannah. With Kind regards

We quote the detailed covering of the news from The Daily Star as under :

" In Tangail, five people including three of a family were killed and five injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a microbus on Bangabandhu Bridge approach road in Kalihati upazila in the afternoon. Police and witnesses said the accident took place when a Rangpur-bound bus collided with an oncoming microbus near Salla area of the upazila killing five people on the spot. On information a police team from Bangabandhu Bridge East Police Station (BBEPS) rushed to the spot and rescued the bodies, reports our correspondent in Tangail. The deceased are Rafi-al-Jabi, 46, of Pachbibi upazila in Joypurhut, his son Sami-al-Jabi, 15, father-in-law Rezaul Karim, 65, and their domestic helps Ashraf Hossain, 16, and Monwara Begum, 40. Mohammad Sajahan, additional superintendent of police (ASP) of Gopalpur Circle, said Rafi, an engineer of Basundhara Group, was returning to Dhaka along with his family members by the microbus after celebrating Eid at his village home. Rafi was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident, the ASP added. The injured-- microbus passengers Jubayda Kaniz, 35, wife of Rafi and their four-year-old daughter Jabin, and driver and helper of the bus Ismail Hossain, 30, and Monirul Islam, 25, respectively were admitted to Tangail General Hospital. Reckless driving of the microbus driver was primarily blamed for the fatal accident, Helalul Islam, officer-in-charge of BBEPS, said quoting witnesses. "

I am speechless when I first received the news from Shoheb and then I manage to speak to Swapan and Chengish. We all have to leave but who knows Rafi and others have to go this way. We are helpless but only thing we can pray. My wife was crying, my daughters ( Natasha & Anisha) were shocked when they heard the news, since they met Rafi Bhabi and the little daughter at Dhanmondi road/26 on 09 July 2011 while they were in Dhaka. Memories are fresh. I met Rafi and Mohsin soon after that in Basundhora office probably between 12-15 July. What a pleasant memory. All three were laughing and joking. Rafi had that usual smile/ dosta ar bhale lage na (chakri chaira debo). I was so grateful to Rafi and Mohsin at that time. We had fakharuddin Biriani , Who knows that will be my last memory with Rafi. But I still I remember rafi in between left us and went for prayer. Rafi you are really in our memory. We really pray for you. Mohsin, I called you but I know you are busy and could not pick up the phone. I know it is relly heard for you that you lost not only a good friend but a good colleague too. Stay well and be strong. Dostaora, I have become little emotional now. Lets pary again for Rafi and all the departed soul.
Also speedy recovery of bhabi and the little one.

We all are in a state of shock right now. Rafi’s daughter has gone through an operation this morning to set her bones in leg. Rafi’s wife has to undergo similar operation tomorrow. Vabi has multiple fractures of bones in arm, leg and color bone – no internal damage has been detected so far. Please keep us in your prayers.

I just had a talk with Mamdud. He is also with Mohoshin. The bodies of Rafi and his son are being taken to Pachbibi from Jaipurhat now. The Namaj e Janaja will be held after Johor prayer and they will be buried soon after that. I could not talk to Hashem and could not manage any update on bhabi and the little one (possibly Jabin is her mane). Where ever you are please keep praying for Rafi and his son.

I am sorry to give you this news – we have lost Rafi for ever (innalillahe…). He was returning from Jaipurjat with his whole family – he was driving the car. The car collided almost head on with a bus. He, his son, his father in law and two servants died on the spot. Right now, their dead body is being taken to Bogra, Mohsin is accompanying. I had a talk with Mohoshin, he was too upset to talk much. Bhabi and their daughter survived, but both of them are seriously injured. They have been taken to Dhaka Square hospital. Hashem and Kafi was at the hospital when bhabi was brought in around 10pm. Bhabi was conscious but still does not know the real news. I am in Khulna and bighting my fingers as I can not do anything from here. Allah, Allah, Allah ….. please give us the strength to take this, please give us sabar.

Dear Inam. Thank you for phoning me this afternoon and promptly sending this message to our UK Group of mariners. Inna Lillahe ....I was speechless like you too on getting the sad news of this very tragic accident, in which Rafi Al Zabi and his son lost their valuable lives. It is difficult to come to terms with this, just cannot believe that such a tragic death happened only a few days after another fellow mariner lost his life in a road accident on the Airport Road, Dhaka recently. I am very deeply saddened by this shocking news and my deepest condolence to the bereaved family. My thoughts are with the family at this very difficult moment and I pray for the speedy recovery of Rafi's wife and daughter. I also pray for the departed souls of Rafi and his son. Best regards

Please see the news item on the tragic death of Rafi, his son, father in law and others, and the serious accident to his wife and daughter in the Daily Star of 4 September: http://www.thedailystar.net/newDesign/latest_news.php?nid=32019 I know how Rafi's batch mates feel at this diffucult moment. It is really sad that they have to face the reality of accepting such a devastating news and my deepest sympathy is with them. It would also be a very difficult moment for the fellow mariners from 19th and 21st batches and my thoughts are with them too. Let us continue with our prayers. Ameen. Best regards
