Obituary from Marine Academy, Chittagong, Bangladesh, 19 Jul 2003

Capt. Syed Mujib Baksh (12th), Australia, nabikapu@yahoo.com
Its difficult to come in terms with the demise of zakir. So many memories with this fine officer. Both of us sailed on m.v.banglar swapna as 2/0 & 3/0 in 1981 with some wonderful crowds. (Saiful, Mesbah 14th, Md. Ali, Ikram 16th, Taher bhai, bhabi to name a few). We were in frequent touch till I left B.S.C. in 1990. He was very thorough and sincere in his job. An honest and dedicated seafarer. What really attracted me was his simplicity. He was a very simple, nice gentleman. My sincere sympathy to dilruba bhabi + kids. May the ALLAH rest his soul in peace and give strength to his family to bear this loss.

Capt. S.M. Zakir Hossain, was not only my batch mate but also we sailed together in first ship of our sea life and also joined the Marine Academy as Nautical Instructor together. I saw him last just two weeks before of his sudden and untimely demise. I recall his excellent personality and many constructive inputs into deliberations on various aspects of maritime education and training as Chief of Nautical Studies (CNS) in Marine Academy. He was very dedicated and sincere in his job. I also have fond memories of his humour and lively participation in social gatherings. Definitely his presence will be missed by many. In my view due his excellent contribution to the Marine Academy, the Academy should dedicate a block (in cadet's dormitory) or a building in his name. May Allah bless his soul with eternal peace and Jannat ul Ferdaous.Capt. Syed Naushad Ali Shah Ex-Nautical Instructor, Marine Academy.

I am deeply shocked to know the unexpected death news of Zakir. I sailed with him for quite some time. I remember him as one of the highly professional officers and somebody you would like to sail with. I have a lot of recollection of my time with him. My thoughts are with his family and I pray for the peace of his departed soul. After Alamgir(13th), Zakir is another unexpected victim of heart attack. It should be another reminder for all of us to look after our health and have regular checkups.

Our deepest condolences to the family. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you think we can be of assistance within our limited means. To our friends as Dito indicated in his recent mail - we should take stock of this situation and see a doctor to check our health condition (Stress test). Dito also suggested considering getting & using a treadmill. I think we should consider the fact that we are no more as young as we used to be.

Yet another of our love ones has gone forever for a cause of health negligence. Regular medical check up could probably reveal the danger of a possible heart disease. We were together in Banglar Banni. Zakir Chief Officer myself Second Engineer. One-day afternoon in Chittagong he asked me to accompany him to meet a spinster (a possible spouse for him). We went to a house in Agrabad (relatives of Zakir). After several hours a young beautiful innocent looking lady with another couple arrived. Zakir was allowed to have conversation with the young lady privately.  Today after so many years I cannot imagine that, that innocent lady has been punished so severely (a widow now).
Zakir was a simple, man of principle and extremely honest person. I have so many memmories. May Allah award him the heaven.

The sudden news of Capt. Zakir Hossain's death was a great shock for me. I wish to express my profound sympathy in this loss. As an ex-employee of B.S.C., I came to see him as a kind, honest, gentle man who never gave less than unqualified acceptance of others. He will live forever in our minds and hearts.

"...........assalamualikum.it took me few hours to confirm the news from dhaka as it was least expected. Any how later, I confirmed from Sajid sir at the academy & informed Imtiaz sir & others. Late Capt Zakir was my next door neighbor in O.R. Nizam road where we have been living for last five years. He served Zara & Tasmia, as you know when I was in the office of Nishan. Bhabi & Raka were very close for various reasons. We knew that all of them had left for dhaka for the vacation. Lots of memories which i may have to cherish for years to come. Bhabi is still in Dhaka. It is very very hard for me to believe such a death which is so immature. May Allah bless his departed soul & give Bhabi, Nazia , Abrar the courage to stand the shock....."
